Sound Healing with the Drum Practitioner training is the College of Sound Healing’s diploma course, taught across ten sessions, usually five weekends, though other options are available (check the listings), spread over several months, with practice and case studies expected in between. It is meant for people who want to work with the drum as an instrument of healing, whether as part of an existing practice or as something new.
A drum workshop is a day or a weekend spent learning some specific use or aspect of drumming, usually in a small group and often with drums being provided, though bringing your own is fine, of course. For most, no previous experience is needed, and nobody is expected to perform, though there is generally practice to be done during the workshop.
Drum Circles are where a group of drummers, drum together, the beats tend to build slowly from a single steady pulse, so people who arrive convinced they have no rhythm tend to leave having played for hours without noticing. Interspersed among the rounds of drumming these are sometimes different tasks, such as chanting or simple discussion of a subject or ’cause’ where energy could be sent by the drummers.
If you are not sure which you want, start with a workshop. Tutors here set their own dates, venues and prices, so it is worth reading the tutor’s profile as well as the course description. Every course on this page links to the person teaching it, and every tutor lists the courses they currently run.
