Do I need my own drum?
Short answer: no, drums are provided at most workshops or drum circles, and there are usually spares (check the listing or ask the tutor). If you own your own drum, you are more than welcome to bring it, and if not, once you get started, you are likely to want your own. The practitioner training: you will need your own drum and rattle; the tutors will be able to guide you in purchasing or making your own, and many tutors run drum birthing workshops.
Do I need any experience?
That depends. Many workshops and circles are for people who have never touched a drum. You will not be asked to play on your own, and nobody will correct you in front of the room. At more advanced workshops and practitioner trainings, you will want to have your own drum (and rattle) to use. If you have caught the bug, you are likely to have one already!
What is the difference between a drum circle, a workshop and practitioner training?
A circle is a group playing together, usually drop in, with no teaching. A workshop or course is taught, over a day or several. Practitioner training is for people who want to work with the drum for other people, and is run over several months.
Is a drum circle therapy?
It is not; many people find it does them good, and a lot leave calmer than they arrived, but a drum circle is not therapy and is not offered as treatment. If you are looking for treatment, speak to a suitably qualified practitioner about what you need.
I have a health condition, is this workshop suitable?
Speak to the tutor before you book, and they can describe what the workshop involves and whether your condition is contraindicated, they will also be able to say whether anything can be adjusted. Sessions vary a great deal, and the person running it is the one who will know.
How do I find something near me?
Every course listing carries its venue, and the Nearest to box on the courses page sorts them by distance from a postcode or a town name, you can also browse by region.
How do I book?
To book a workshop, drum circle space or practitioner training, contact the tutor directly, either by email or by going to their website and using the contact form there.
Are the tutors qualified?
Every tutor listed here has completed the College of Sound Healing’s diploma course. To teach it they have gone further: put forward by their own tutor, then through the College’s tutor training course, then shadowed the diploma twice more.
The site is run by a college tutor, and all the tutors listed are known personally by that person.
I am a tutor. How do I get listed?
If you are a CoSH tutor and wish to be added to the directory, please speak to James.
